A Meeting of Minds at the Installer Show

In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Andrew Cunningham, an expert in heat pump technology and a passionate advocate for sustainable energy solutions. This enlightening conversation took place shortly after we both attended the Installer Show in Birmingham, one of the UK's premier events for heating system installers.

The Installer Show brings together professionals from across the plumbing, heating, and renewable energy sectors. It's a three-day exhibition where manufacturers showcase their latest technologies, industry experts share knowledge, and installers can learn about emerging trends and requirements in the field.

The Unconference: A Unique Approach to Heat Pump Adoption

Before diving into our main discussion, we reminisced about our experience at an "unconference" that took place the day before the Installer Show. Unlike traditional conferences with predetermined agendas and speakers, an unconference allows participants to create the schedule collaboratively on the day. This particular unconference focused on a critical topic: how to achieve the installation of a million heat pumps in the UK.

Andrew explained his journey into the renewable heating sector. Initially trained as a retrofit coordinator and assessor, he conducted Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for homes. This work gave him valuable insight into the energy efficiency of different properties and the challenges homeowners face. His passion for carbon reduction led him to focus specifically on heat pump technology, recognising their potential to significantly cut emissions from domestic heating.

The Spark Gap: Economic Barriers to Heat Pump Adoption

One of the most insightful parts of our conversation concerned what Andrew referred to as the "spark gap" – the price disparity between electricity and gas. Currently in the UK, electricity is approximately four times more expensive than gas, creating a significant economic barrier to heat pump adoption.

As Andrew pointed out, if electricity were priced just 10% higher than gas, even a less efficiently installed heat pump would be more economical to run than a gas boiler. This pricing structure remains one of the biggest obstacles to widespread heat pump adoption in the UK, despite the technology's proven efficiency and environmental benefits.

Political Landscape and Heat Pump Policy

With the UK general election approaching at the time of recording, we discussed the political landscape surrounding heat pump policy. We noted that while there had been some positive steps from certain politicians, including Chris Skidmore who completed a comprehensive Net Zero review, political commitment to heat pump adoption has been inconsistent.

Andrew expressed frustration with the lack of clear policy direction from major political parties regarding heat pumps and renewable heating. He highlighted that the gas industry, being significantly larger and more established than the heat pump sector, has considerable political influence, which often directs policy away from renewable alternatives.

Installer Community and Training

One of BeeXpress's particular interests is the installer community, which is why events like the Installer Show are so important. Andrew and I discussed the critical need for upskilling the workforce of heating engineers to deliver quality heat pump installations.

Andrew viewed the push for better heat pump efficiency as a positive development for the industry. He noted that the challenges around optimising heat pump installations have driven improvements in both technology and installation practices. This focus on quality and efficiency will ultimately benefit consumers and help build confidence in heat pump technology.

The Future of Heat Pumps in the UK

Looking to the future, we considered what might happen following the election and what policy changes would most benefit the heat pump industry. Andrew expressed hope that pricing reforms for electricity and gas would be implemented, making renewable heating more economically attractive to consumers.

Andrew also highlighted the importance of communication in promoting heat pumps. The technical benefits of low-temperature heating systems need to be effectively communicated to homeowners, focusing on improved comfort, consistent heating, and environmental benefits, not just running costs.

Community Action and Advocacy

The episode concluded with a reflection on how individuals within the industry can advocate for policy change. Andrew endorsed the suggestion that installers and industry professionals should contact their MPs to emphasise the importance of renewable heating solutions like heat pumps in achieving the UK's carbon reduction targets.
